What is a Meteor?

A meteor, also known as a shooting star, is the visible phenomenon that occurs when a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up due to friction. When a meteoroid—a small celestial object—plunges into the Earth's atmosphere at high speed, it experiences intense heat and pressure. This causes the meteoroid to heat up and vaporize, creating a glowing trail of light that we observe as a meteor.

What is an Asteroid?

An asteroid is a small rocky object that orbits the Sun. It is larger than a meteoroid but smaller than a planet. Asteroids are remnants from the early formation of our solar system, primarily composed of rock and metal. They can range in size from small boulders to several hundred kilometers in diameter.

What is a comet?

A comet is a celestial object composed of a nucleus, a coma, and a tail. Comets are often described as "dirty snowballs" or "icy dirtballs" because they consist of a mixture of rock, dust, water ice, and other organic compounds. These objects originate from the outer regions of the solar system, typically from the Kuiper Belt or the Oort Cloud.

What is an fireball?

A fireball is a very bright meteor that appears as a large and intense ball of light streaking through the Earth's atmosphere. Fireballs are caused by larger and more massive meteoroids entering the atmosphere at high speeds. The intense friction between the meteoroid and the atmospheric gases heats up the meteoroid to extremely high temperatures, causing it to glow brightly.

What is a Meteorite?

A meteorite is a solid object that originates from outer space and survives its passage through the Earth's atmosphere to reach the surface. It is a fragment of a meteoroid, which is a small celestial object that enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up, creating a visible phenomenon known as a meteor or shooting star.
