What is Red Rain?

Red rain refers to a phenomenon where rainfall appears to be red or pink in color instead of the usual clear or grayish appearance. There have been a few notable instances of red rain reported throughout history, and they can be attributed to different causes.

Causes of Red Rain :

Saharan Dust: 

In some regions, particularly around the Mediterranean, red rain may occur due to the presence of Sahara desert dust particles in the atmosphere. The dust can get carried by winds and mixed with rain, giving it a reddish appearance.

Algae or Micro-organisms: 

Certain types of algae or microorganisms can cause red rain. For example, a phenomenon known as "blood rain" has been reported in various parts of the world, where the rainwater appears red due to high concentrations of red algae or other microscopic organisms.

Pollution: 

In heavily industrialized areas with significant air pollution, rainwater can pick up pollutants and particulate matter, leading to discolored rain. These pollutants can tint the rainwater red or brown.

Volcanic Activity: 

During volcanic eruptions, the ash and other volcanic particles can enter the atmosphere and mix with rain, resulting in red rain. The presence of volcanic minerals and compounds can give the rain a reddish or rusty appearance.

Occurrence of Red Rain :

The specific incident that occurred in the state of Kerala in 2001. From July 25 to September 23 of that year, there were reports of red-colored rain falling in various parts of the state, particularly in the districts of Kottayam and Idukki. This event gained significant attention and sparked scientific investigation.

The red rain phenomenon in Kerala was initially observed as a result of heavy rainfall. The rainwater appeared to be colored red or pink, and it stained clothes and other objects. This event raised concerns and curiosity among the local population, leading to scientific studies to determine the cause.

Several hypotheses were proposed to explain the red rain in Kerala. One prominent theory suggested that the colored rain was due to the presence of extraterrestrial microorganisms or spores. This hypothesis was based on the discovery of unusual biological cells in the rainwater, which had characteristics that were different from known terrestrial organisms. However, further research and analysis indicated that these cells were likely of terrestrial origin, specifically from a type of algae called Trentepohlia annulata.
